Discord Is Sorting Every Account by Age This Week. Check Your Server

Discord began placing every account into Adult, Teen or Unconfirmed groups this week. Your server's name and description are now one of the signals, and a few old habits will cost you members.

On September 22, Discord CTO Stanislav Vishnevskiy announced that every account is being placed into one of three age groups: Adult, Teen or Unconfirmed. In his post he says Discord is launching it "over the course of this week, so it may take a few days to reach your account." This is the global age assurance rollout Discord delayed in February after the face scan backlash.

Most people will notice nothing. Server owners should notice one line in the technical write-up: the model that guesses your members' ages reads your server's name and description. For years a server description was marketing copy. Now it is also a data point, and the servers that tagged themselves edgy for fun are about to find out what that costs.

What Discord actually published

Discord promised a methodology post back in February. It kept that promise. The technical explainer describes a tree-based model that predicts whether an account likely belongs to an adult or a teen. The inputs are account tenure, activity counts, device data, a numerical fingerprint of where the account sits in Discord's social graph, and community context. Discord defines that last one as signals about the categories of communities a user joins, "based on the server's name and description." It says it does not read messages, media, usernames or bios.

Two things are worth knowing about how it decides. The model has two confidence thresholds. Above the top one you are an adult, below the bottom one a teen, and in between you stay unclassified. Discord says unclassified accounts "will also receive additional protections." It also says the social graph fingerprint is the single most predictive feature, so your server description is one input among several, and probably not the loudest. Discord gives no accuracy percentage. It says the model "meets or exceeds" methods widely used where age assurance is required by law, and it admits some accounts will land in the wrong group.

What changes for a teen account is familiar if you read our teen defaults checklist in August. Messages from non-friends go to requests, sensitive images get filtered, age-restricted servers and channels are blocked, and full profile details are shown only to friends and smaller servers. Discord does not say how small a smaller server is.

What to do before the tickets arrive

  • Rewrite a joke description. If your wholesome art server calls itself unhinged and NSFW adjacent for laughs, that text is now a signal Discord says it reads. Describe what the server is. Our opinion: accurate beats clever here.
  • Flag channels, not servers. A server-wide age flag now shuts out every Teen and every Unconfirmed account. Put the adult material in one flagged channel, or use the spoiler channels Discord added so communities can hide content "without age-gating an entire server."
  • Pin the fix. Members who land in the wrong group can change it at User Settings, then Account Status. Put that path in your FAQ channel before the first person opens a ticket asking why a channel vanished.
  • Never ask for proof in your server. Discord says it only receives an age signal and that vendors delete the selfie and ID data after checking, per its vendor page. A mod collecting ID screenshots in a ticket is a worse privacy risk than anything Discord shipped this week.
  • Move onboarding out of DMs. Teen and Unconfirmed accounts get non-friend DMs routed to requests. If your welcome flow depends on a bot DM, move the steps that matter into a public channel.
  • Brief your mods on profiles. In a large server, your team may see less of a teen member's profile than it used to. Moderate on behavior in your channels, which is what you should have been doing anyway.

Your server description used to be a pitch. As of this week it is also a data point Discord says it reads. Write it like one.

Why the rollout is happening now

Vishnevskiy writes that Discord has already had to launch age assurance in Brazil and Texas, and that policymakers from the European Union to Indonesia are asking for the same. Discord chose one global system over a country by country patchwork, which is why a server in Toronto gets the same change as one in São Paulo.

The trust problem is real and Discord knows it. In October 2025 it disclosed that about 70,000 users may have had ID photos exposed after a breach at a third-party vendor handling age appeals, as TechCrunch reported when the rollout was delayed. This time Discord names its orchestration vendor, k-ID, lists retention per method, and adds options like app store age ranges and a reusable AgeKey. Those are Discord's claims about Discord. They are also more detail than most platforms publish, and the 2026 Transparency Report is where to check them.

How does Discord decide if an account is an adult or a teen?

A model looks at account tenure, activity counts, device data, a social graph fingerprint and the categories of servers you join, based on server names and descriptions. Discord says it does not read messages, media, usernames or bios. Uncertain accounts stay Unconfirmed.

How do I check or fix my Discord age group?

Go to User Settings, then Account Status. If the group is wrong, you can confirm your age there with a method such as a credit card check, an on-device selfie estimate, an ID scan or an app store age range.

Can teens still join my Discord server?

Yes, as long as the server is not age-restricted. Teen accounts can message friends, join voice and take part in normal servers. They cannot open age-restricted servers or channels.

Does my server description affect my members' age group?

Discord says server names and descriptions feed a community context signal in its model. It also says the social graph feature is the most predictive one, so the description is one input among several. Keep it accurate.

Discord built the sorting machine. Deciding what your server says about itself, and who can still get through the door, is community work, and that is the part we handle for the communities we run and build software for.
